The Starter Checklist: 10 Habits Before Core Fundamentals
The ten verifiable habits this track has built, two audit hands to test yourself against, and the readiness criteria for moving on to Core Fundamentals.
Assumptions: All examples use a 6-max online cash game at $0.50/$1 with 100 big blind stacks and no rake unless a different setup is stated.
Everything in this track compresses into ten habits. Not ten ideas to agree with — ten behaviors that either show up in your hand histories or don't. Each one is checkable: a stranger reading your last session could mark every habit pass or fail without asking you a single question. That's the standard, because poker doesn't pay for understanding; it pays for doing. This lesson states the ten, audits two complete hands against them, and tells you exactly when you're ready for the Core Fundamentals track.
The ten habits
1. Play tight, by position. Your starting hands come from a position-based chart, not from mood. Early position plays a narrow, strong range; the button plays the widest. From the starting-hand lessons, here's the site's UTG baseline — note how disciplined it is:
Every offsuit ace below AJo, every K-rag, every Q9-type hand: absent. If hands outside your charts keep appearing in your history, habit one is failing — and as the weak-aces lesson showed, those are exactly the hands that lose stacks to domination.
2. Raise, don't limp. When you're first into the pot, you raise (to about 3bb online) or you fold. Limping forfeits the two ways raising wins — taking the pot preflop and taking the initiative — and invites the dominated multiway mess from the raise-first lesson.
3. Bet your strong hands. Top pair good kicker or better bets for value, street after street, as the value-betting lesson taught. Slowplaying is the luxury of a future, fancier you; right now, strong hands that check are profits that evaporate.
4. Fold one pair to big aggression. When the bets get large — a check-raise, a triple barrel, an all-in — one pair is a bluff catcher at best, and at beginner stakes the bluffs mostly aren't there. The fold-postflop lesson's rule stands: one pair plays small and medium pots, not stacks.
5. Price your draws. Outs, times 2 or 4, against call ÷ (pot + call). A flush draw at a quarter of the pot is a snap call; a gutshot at half pot is a snap fold. No call without the comparison.
6. Stay bankrolled. 30-50 buy-ins for your stake, money that's only for poker, moving down without drama around 25. The math of ruin doesn't negotiate, even with winners.
7. Act in turn. No folding early, no announcing intentions, no reaching for chips while action pends. It's etiquette, but it's also information discipline — acting out of turn hands strategy data to the table for free.
8. Never slow-roll. When you're called and you have the winner, show it promptly; when someone tables the best hand, muck and move on. Slow-rolling — pausing theatrically before revealing the nuts — is the one sin every poker culture agrees on. Win like you've done it before.
9. Review decisions, not results. After each session, a few minutes with the question "would I make the same choice again, knowing only what I knew then?" The four quadrants from the results lesson are your filing system; the dangerous square — bad decision, good outcome — is what review exists to catch.
10. Quit when tilted. A fixed stop-loss (three buy-ins is sound), enforced without appeal — and quit for anger, fatigue, or distraction even when the money's fine. Calm-you makes the rule; tilted-you obeys it. The game runs twenty-four hours a day; your judgment doesn't, and tomorrow's table will have the same seats.
Habits 1-5 are strategy, 6 is survival, 7-8 are professionalism, 9-10 are psychology. Lose any one of them and the other nine leak through the hole.
Where each habit came from
Every habit above is the distilled action item of specific lessons you've already done — which matters, because when a habit keeps failing, the fix is a targeted re-read, not generic resolve:

Audit hand one: ten for ten
Read this hand and check habits off as they pass.
Walk the checklist. Habit 1: Q♠Q♥ is in every opening range from every seat — pass. Habit 2: raised to $3, exactly 3bb, no limp — pass. Habit 3: this is the one to study. The flop comes J♣6♦2♠ and hero holds an overpair, a clear premium on a dry board. He bets $4 into $6.50, then $11 into $14.50, then $25 into $36.50: three streets, sized to grow the pot each round. Against even the strongest one-pair hand that calls him — J♥T♥, flopped top pair — QQ has about 81% equity on that flop. Checking "to trap" anywhere in this sequence would be donating equity to a hand that's drawing to five outs. Habit 4: never tested — BB only called — but note hero's sizing kept the pot value-shaped, and had BB check-raised the turn big, the overpair would face a real decision rather than an auto-stack-off. Habits 7 and 8: acted in turn throughout and showed the winner immediately. The result: an $86.50 pot, won with no heroics, no reads, no big laydowns — just the checklist executing itself. Most winning poker looks exactly this boring.
Audit hand two: flag every violation
Now the other kind of hand. Count the broken habits before reading the breakdown.
The breakdown, habit by habit. Habit 1, broken: A♥4♣ from UTG isn't close — check the UTG chart above; the weakest offsuit ace it opens is AJo. The weak-aces lesson named this exact hand type a chip trap. Habit 2, broken: he limped it, the worst of both worlds — money in, no initiative, and an invitation for exactly the raise that came. The station leak (lesson two), in full bloom: on Q♦3♠2♣ he holds ace-high and check-calls $6. What worse hands is CO betting? Almost none that continue to pressure — he's hoping, not deciding. Habit 5, broken: the turn is the priced mistake. The K♠ arrives, CO bets $16 into $21.50, and hero's hand is a gutshot — exactly four fives complete his wheel. The price: $16 to win $53.50, about 30% required. The chance: four outs, one card, about 9%. He's paying triple the fair rate, and the implied-odds excuse doesn't survive contact with the numbers — a 21-point gap is unfillable. The river fold is technically correct and almost beside the point: the $26 was donated on the streets before, $1 plus $3 of preflop stubbornness, $6 of station calling, $16 of priceless chasing.
Notice something important: hero never acted out of turn, never slow-rolled, and maybe even logged off to review the hand afterward. Passing six habits while failing four still lights money on fire. The checklist is conjunctive — and, not or.
Are you ready for Core Fundamentals?
The next track assumes the foundation is poured. Move on when all three of these are true:
1. The mechanics are automatic. Blinds, action order, showdown rules, side pots, the min-raise rule, reading the board — zero hesitation, online or live. If you still occasionally have to think about who acts first or whether your kicker plays, redo the Rules and Mechanics modules; everything ahead builds on them at full speed.
2. Your preflop ranges are stable. Not memorized perfectly — stable. Your last few sessions show position-appropriate hands raised first-in, no limps, no A8o calls against early raises, no cold-called 3-bets with dominated big cards. You should be able to predict, before looking, roughly what hands your session history will show you playing from each seat. If your range still depends on how the last orbit went, that's habit 9 or 10 failing upstream of habit 1.
3. You have no auto-calls left. Every call in your recent history can answer the question: what worse hands was he betting, or what price was I getting? "I had a pair" and "I had a draw" are no longer sentences you accept from yourself without numbers attached.
Scoring yourself: the thirty-check audit
Here's the self-test, made concrete enough to actually run. Over your next three sessions, score every habit pass or fail per session — thirty checks total. A habit passes a session only if it held for the whole session: one A9o call against a raise fails habit 1 for the night, even if the other two hundred hands were clean, because habits are defined by their exceptions.
Scoring guidance for the slippery ones: habit 3 fails if you find a top-pair-or-better hand that checked back two streets without a stated reason. Habit 5 fails on any draw call where you can't reconstruct the price you were getting. Habit 9 passes only if the review actually happened — a session you didn't review is an automatic fail, which is the point. Habit 10 can't fail on a winning night, but a losing session that blew through your stop-loss fails it regardless of how justified each individual rebuy felt at the time.
The bar: at least 27 of 30 passes, with no single habit failing twice. One failure of three different habits is noise — everyone misclicks, everyone makes one loose call. The same habit failing in two sessions out of three is a pattern, and patterns have addresses: go back to the lesson listed for that habit in the mapping above, re-read it, and run another three-session audit before advancing. This is an evidence standard, not a vibe — fitting, because the entire skill of this final module has been replacing vibes with checkable claims.
A warning about the audit itself: you will be tempted to grade generously, especially on nights you won. That temptation has a name — it's the dangerous quadrant from the results lesson, applied to self-assessment. If anything, grade harder on winning sessions; that's where the rewarded errors hide. Some players hand the audit to a friend or post hands to a study group precisely because a stranger's eyes don't care what the cashier said.
What Core Fundamentals adds is range thinking in earnest: continuation betting, board textures, bluffing with a plan, defending blinds, hand reading street by street. All of it presumes the ten habits the way algebra presumes arithmetic. A player with these habits and nothing else beats the lowest stakes slowly and surely; a player with advanced concepts and broken habits beats nothing at all, spectacularly.
