Live Card-Room Procedure: Posting, String Bets, and the One-Chip Rule
Your first live session, start to finish: the waitlist, getting seated, protecting your cards, and the three rules that catch every online player — verbal declarations are binding, string bets are illegal, and a single oversized chip is just a call.
Assumptions: Examples in this lesson assume a live $1/$2 9-handed no-limit cash game with 100 big blind ($200) stacks, the standard entry game in most card rooms.
Live poker has the same rules as online poker and a completely different operating manual. Online, the software enforces everything — you physically cannot string-bet, act out of turn, or muck the winner. Live, you are the software, and the dealer and floor staff enforce the rules on you. None of it is hard, but three specific rules — binding verbal declarations, string bets, and the one-chip rule — routinely cost unprepared online players real money in their first sessions. From the front desk to a seat
Card rooms run on a waitlist. At the front desk (or on apps like Bravo, or the room's website), put your name on the list for your game — "$1/$2 no-limit." When a seat opens, the brush (the floor person managing the list) calls your name and points you to a table and seat number.
Buy chips either at the cashier's cage before sitting or, in most rooms, at the table: sit down, put your cash on the felt, and tell the dealer "two hundred, please." The dealer (or a chip runner) exchanges it. Money plays as announced in many rooms even before chips arrive, but don't rely on quirks yet — just buy in before your first hand. For a $1/$2 game, $200 is the standard 100bb buy-in; typical windows run $100–$300.
Stack your chips in front of you, keep your largest-denomination chips visible at the front of your stack (this is a rule, not a courtesy — opponents are entitled to estimate what you have), and you're in.
Posting in or waiting for the big blind
Just like online's "wait for big blind" option, you have two ways to receive your first hand:
- Wait until the big blind reaches your seat naturally and play for free. At a 9-handed table this averages a few minutes.
- Post in: put up $2 (a big blind) immediately and get dealt the next hand. Your post is live, like a blind.
Most rooms won't deal you in for free between the button and the blinds anyway (you'd be gaining a free button), so the dealer may tell you to wait a hand or two regardless of preference. Waiting is standard; posting is fine in a great game. Either way, the dealer handles it — when in doubt, ask. Dealers help new players all day long, and "first time playing live, what do I do here?" gets you patience, not mockery.
Protect your cards, control your chips
Two physical habits replace what software did for you online:
Protect your hand. Your hole cards live face-down on the felt in front of you — never below the table, never against your chest mid-hand. Place a chip or a card cap (any small object; many players use a favorite chip) on top of them. An unprotected hand can be accidentally swept into the muck by the dealer or fouled by another player's discards, and a mucked hand is dead with no recourse, even if it was the winner. This genuinely happens; the card cap costs nothing and makes it impossible.
Mind the betting line and motions. Chips you push forward toward the pot are committed. Two corollaries: don't fidget chips forward while thinking, and when you fold, slide your cards face-down toward the dealer gently — don't fling them. Keep your cards and chips clearly separated until you've decided.
Also: cards speak. At showdown, turn both cards face up and let the dealer read your hand. Never muck at showdown because you think you lost — beginners misread boards constantly, and the dealer will award you a pot you didn't know you'd won. (Etiquette around showdown speed is the next lesson's territory.)
Verbal declarations are binding
The foundational rule of live action: if you say it in turn, you've done it. Announce "call" and you have called, even if you then see your hand is trash. Announce "raise" and you are obligated to raise. Say "fifty" and you've bet fifty. This rule exists so players can't fish for reactions — announce a raise, watch faces, then "change their mind."
This makes verbal announcement your best friend, not a danger: the cleanest way to act live is to say the action first, then move the chips. "Raise to fifteen" followed by any chip motion is unambiguous and legally protected — once you've declared, you can take three trips to your stack to assemble the $15 if you like. Silent chip-pushing is where all the trouble below lives.
String bets: why "I call... and raise" is illegal
A string bet (or string raise) is adding chips to your bet in multiple motions without a prior verbal declaration of the total — pushing out calling chips, then reaching back for raising chips. It's illegal everywhere, for the same anti-angle-shooting reason: the two-motion raise lets you push the call, read the table's reaction, and decide mid-action whether to "finish" the raise. The dealer's ruling is brutal and standard: only the first motion counts. Your "raise" is a call.
The spoken version is equally dead: "I call... and raise" is a binding call the moment the word leaves your mouth. The first declared action stands; nothing after the word "call" exists.

Feel the cost in this example. Hero's jacks wanted to 3-bet to thin the field and build a pot as a favorite. Ruled a call, he instead invites the big blind in cheaply — and against two opponents, JJ's equity is about 61%, versus the roughly 78% it holds heads-up against a single random hand. Worse, multiway flops bring overcards to jacks constantly, turning a premium pair into a guessing game. The entire disaster is avoided by speaking first: "Raise to thirty." Then move chips however you like.
The legal silent raise, if you prefer not to speak: move the entire amount in one single motion. One push, all the chips, no return trips. But until that's habit, announce everything.
The one-chip rule
Here's the rule that catches every online player at least once: a single chip thrown into the pot without announcement is a call, regardless of the chip's denomination (as long as it covers the call).
The logic: tossing one $25 chip at a $6 bet is ambiguous — did you mean $25, or did you just not have six singles? The rule resolves all ambiguity in the conservative direction: silence + single chip = call. The dealer will make change and return $19.

Analysis
Note the asymmetry that makes this rule easy to live with: the word "raise" alone, spoken before the chip lands, fixes everything — the single $25 chip then plays as a raise to $25. Multiple chips are read differently (pushing a $25 chip plus others signals an amount, and different rooms parse it slightly differently), which is one more reason the speak-first habit dominates: it makes every chip motion mean exactly what you said.
Acting on the announced amount, not the chips you see
Live dealers announce action as it happens — "raise to fifteen" — and you act on the announced and verified amount, not on your glance at a messy chip stack. This matters most when you're in the blinds with action coming back around.

Analysis
Three procedural points packed in here. First, your posted blind counts toward your call — facing the raise to $15, the big blind owes $13 more, not $15. Pushing $15 is a common (harmless, but sloppy) beginner move that forces the dealer to make change. Second, if the announcement and the chips ever disagree, the dealer recounts and the verified amount stands — ask "how much?" any time you're unsure; it's a normal question, not a tell. Third, once you know the real price you can do real math: $13 to win $18 is about 1.4-to-1, meaning you'd need around 42% raw equity to call on pot odds alone — the kind of calculation later lessons build on, available only once you've counted the action correctly.
While we're on the blinds: when you're the small blind and want to complete or call, the same subtract-what-you-posted logic applies, and when you face a re-raise after posting, your blind still plays. The arithmetic never changes: amount to call = announced total − what you already have in.
Other live mechanics worth knowing on day one
- Rake: most live cash games take a percentage of each pot (commonly 10% capped around $4–$6) plus maybe a jackpot drop. It's posted at the table. This module's examples ignore rake per the standing assumption, but know it exists — it's why tiny pots barely matter live.
- One player per hand acts at a time, in turn. Wait for the player on your right. The dealer will point to you if you lose track ("action's on you").
- Straddles: some player may post a voluntary $4 blind ("straddle") before the deal. You'll learn the strategy later; for now just recognize that it doubles the stakes for that hand and the straddler acts last preflop.
- Phones and headphones: rules vary, but no phone use while in a hand is nearly universal. Cards get killed for it in many rooms.
- Table and seat changes: if you want a different table at the same stakes, ask the brush for a table change and you'll go on a short list; if you want a different seat at your own table (say, to get position on the game's biggest stack), call "seat change" when one opens — many rooms hand out a seat-change button to mark who asked first. Both are routine requests that nobody reads anything into.
- Cashing out: when you're done, stand up and tell the dealer you're leaving; carry your chips (or get racks — plastic trays holding 100 chips) to the cage and exchange for cash. Racking up mid-hand is fine to prepare, but you play the hands you're dealt until you actually leave. No drama required: finish a hand, rack up, tip culture varies but $1 per decent pot won is the common dealer-tipping norm in US rooms.
When something goes wrong: misdeals, exposed cards, and calling the floor
Live hands occasionally break, and knowing the standard remedies keeps you calm when they do:
- Exposed card on the deal. If the dealer accidentally flips one of your hole cards, you don't get to keep it or pick a replacement — the standard procedure is that the exposed card becomes the next burn card and you receive the top card of the deck after the deal completes. If two or more cards are exposed, it's usually a misdeal: all cards come back, the deck is reshuffled, and the hand restarts with the same button. Misdeals can only be declared before substantial action has occurred — once two players have acted, the hand plays on as dealt.
- Boxed card. A card found face-up in the deck mid-hand is treated as a meaningless piece of paper: the dealer shows it around and continues with the next card. No misdeal.
- Wrong amounts in the pot, disputed action, anything contested: the dealer's first job is to freeze the action and reconstruct it; if any player disagrees with the reconstruction, anyone may call for the floor — the supervisor whose ruling is final. Saying "floor, please" is not aggressive or rude; it's the designed mechanism, and good rooms encourage it over table arguments. Never accept a tableside "ruling" from another player, however confident they sound, and never argue with the dealer about a rule — escalate politely instead. While a decision is pending, protect your cards and touch nothing.
Two related self-protection habits round this out. First, count a raise before you act, not after — if a bet looks light or heavy, ask the dealer to verify ("how much is the raise?") rather than discovering the discrepancy after your chips are in. Second, watch your pots being pushed: dealers are human, and verifying that the pot matches the action takes three seconds. If a mistake reaches you — too much change, a pot pushed your way in error — flag it immediately; pocketing a known error is treated as theft in every room.
The one-sentence operating manual
Almost every live procedural rule compresses into a single habit: announce your action clearly, in turn, before touching chips. "Call." "Raise to thirty." "Fold." Verbal is binding, so it can't be ruled a string bet, can't fall foul of the one-chip rule, can't be misread by the dealer, and can't be angle-shot by an opponent claiming your motion was ambiguous. Speak first, move chips second, protect your cards with a cap, and let the dealer run everything else. Do that and your first live session will be procedurally flawless — which leaves all your attention for the actual poker.
